Callielee M. Wood, 93, passed away Friday, October 21, 2016 at Moses Cone Hospital. Mrs. Wood was born on November 21, 1922 in Troy, NC, where she was raised and graduated from high school. During high school, Mrs. Wood played basketball, facilitated by her father and unbeknownst to her mother. She was an avid sports fan, baseball being a lifelong passion, especially the Boston Red Sox, and she was thrilled to see the Red Sox win three World Series. She was also a huge Boston Celtics fan, and recently attended a Harlem Globetrotters game in Greensboro, where she sat near courtside and thoroughly enjoyed the event. Mrs. Wood retired from a long career in nursing. She began her career after high school in Troy and Raleigh, NC, and Newport News, VA, and worked in a Brooklyn, NY hospital during World War II. After the war, she moved with her family to Boston, MA, where she worked in an OB/GYN office during the week, and worked in hospital Emergency Rooms on the weekends. She loved taking care of people. Among her many other interests, Mrs. Wood was one of the first nationally certified ceramics teachers, obtaining her certification in 1970, and enjoyed teaching ceramics. She also enjoyed knitting, playing Chinese Checkers, cards and watching inspirational movies such as God’s Not Dead. She was very involved with the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies in North Carolina and Massachusetts, and was once a state representative to the International Assembly. She last held the position of State Chaplain. She helped decorate 9 Rose Bowl Parade floats, sang in the Kernersville Joyful Notes, and was a member of Main Street Baptist Church in Kernersville. She taught Sunday School off & on since 1961 wherever she was living at the time. She was also an avid traveler, particularly by car, and drove to Boston by herself this past summer. She attended a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert with her daughter Sandy recently, and talked about it for months. She lived a long, full life. In addition to her parents Coy Franklyn Morris and Stella Morris, Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband Herbert T. Wood, son Mark Wood, and sister Clara Russell. Surviving are four children – Franklyn Wood, Sherry Wood Schenck, David Wood, and Sandy Dickinson; six grandchildren – Tyler Wood, Melissa Marion, Stephanie Stoudenmire, Chris Dennis, Duane Wood, and Matthew Stoudenmire; and five great-grandchildren – Callie Rose Marion, Emma Marion, Jennifer Stoudenmire, Hayden Stoudenmire, Mati Wood and Isaac Wood. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 24, 2016 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. Burial will follow at 4:00 p.m. at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead, NC.
