Moravian Lane closure

The Kernersville Board of Aldermen (BOA) discussed and approved a resolution to hold a public hearing to consider closing Moravian Lane at the March 7 meeting at the Kernersville Municipal Chambers.
Town Manager Curtis Swisher explained how the process of possibly closing Moravian Lane would work.
It was clarified that if a public hearing is held each side will have 20 minutes to speak for or against closing Moravian Lane.
The BOA unanimously approved the resolution of a proposed public hearing.
The resolution states that “the date and time of a Public Hearing on this matter is hereby set to be held on April 26, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers/District Courtroom at Town Hall, 134 East Mountain Street, Kernersville.”
The resolution to set a public hearing was requested by Kernersville Moravian Church.
“The church is over 150 years old and we are running out of graveyard space. We would do the landscaping and pay all the expenses to make that happen. The campus of the church and all of the building sit on one side across the lane on Cherry Street. We bought land from the Musten family over the years to expand the graveyard to there. Given that it is not very safe we would like to have it (Moravian Lane) closed,” said Kernersville Moravian Church Secretary of Unified Board Kathy Bowman Atkins. “We want to expand the graveyard and there are safety concerns.
