Kirkman photo Rosemary McDonald Kirkman, 95, passed away at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem, NC and entered into the presence of her Lord on Saturday, September 26, 2015. She was born on February 11, 1920 in Dysart, Scotland to the late Alexander and Agnes McDonald. She and her cousin Dennis (Teresa) Bell were raised by her grandparents, Angus and Albina Garcia McDonald and her beloved Aunt Elena McDonald Bell. At the onset of WWII, they took one of the last steamer ships out of the United Kingdom to go to Mexico at the bequest of her guardian, Governor Wenceslao Labra Garcia. While in Mexico, she met and later married her husband, Fred Albert Kirkman of Mount Airy, NC. They established their home and raised their family of four children in Kernersville, NC and Naples, FL. Their children are Fred Alexander Kirkman of Kernersville, NC; William L. (Margaret) Kirkman of Kernersville, NC; Rosemary (Gary) Maguire Hart of Advance, NC and Christine Kirkman Garrett of Ash, NC. Rosemary joined Kernersville Moravian Church in 1947. She was an active member of the church and served as the church’s representative to the Mission Society Board of Moravian World Missions Southern Province. She often taught in the primary age children’s Sunday school, served as a Tour Guide for countless Moravian events, and worked at the World Missions shop. Rosemary volunteered at Crisis Control Ministries for many years and was a friend to all in need. She was a member of Clan Donald and spent some of her happiest times at McCrae Meadows at the annual Grandfather Mountain Scottish Highland Games. Rosemary greatly valued world cultures, traveling, and was known for her charming hospitality. Her home was one full of music and books. In her later years, Rosemary moved to Covenant Towers, an active retirement community, in Myrtle Beach, SC and later to Greensboro Manor in Greensboro, NC. The family deeply appreciates all of Rosemary’s friends and caretakers and sends a special thank you to Ed Cassion and Lynn Fulcher who made her last days ones of joy and comfort. She was blessed with five grandchildren, Tina Kirkman Long of Kernersville, NC, Gregory (Stacy) Kirkman of Kernersville, NC, John (Wendy) Maguire of Clarendon, NC, Holly Kathryn Maguire of Chapel Hill, NC, and Alexa Garrett (Geremi) Cappelletti of Greensboro, NC; and five great-grandchildren, Michael Long, Jr., John Wesley Long, Eric William Kirkman, Jordan Maguire and Jake Maguire. A Funeral Service will be held at the old sanctuary of Kernersville Moravian Church on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in Kernersville, NC with Rev. John Rights officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
