Fatal vehicle collision

On Tuesday, May 10, at approximately 7:44 am, the Kernersville Police Department located a 1996 Dodge Dakota pickup truck overturned on the shoulder of US 421 South near Mile Marker 13. Medical and rescue personnel were called to the scene.
One of the occupants, believed to be the driver, was assisted by motorist out of the vehicle. That individual has been identified as 40-year-old Carlos Arturo Amaya Martinez, of Winston-Salem. Martinez was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with serious injuries.
The remaining occupant was partially ejected outside the vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.
US 421 south was closed for several hours, but was reopened to the motoring public at approximately 11:45 a.m.
