On Saturday, July 2 at around 5:20 p.m., the Kernersville Police Department (KPD) responded to 1580 N.C. Hwy. 66 South in reference to a reported shooting.
According to the KPD, officers located a male suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg. EMS responded and transported the victim to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
On Monday, KPD Lt. J.B. Shelor reported that the victim originally told police he had been shot by someone else, but police now believe the injury was the result of a self-inflicted and accidental discharge of the weapon. Officer D.R. Marion and his K9 partner Kimber located the weapon in the bushes near where the incident occurred, Shelor said.
The investigation is still ongoing; however, at this time no suspects are being sought. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the KPD at (336) 996-3177.
