Colfax – William Albert Rice, Sr., 90 passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Adams Farm Living & Rehabilitation. He was born January 24, 1926 in Guilford Co. to the late Albert Ross and Treva Long Rice. Mr. Rice was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a WWII United States Navy Veteran on the USS LST 60 during the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. After returning from active duty, he was employed by Mott-Judson Hosiery for ten years, and with P. Lorillard Tobacco Co. in Greensboro for thirty two years before retiring. Bill was an avid hunter and was well known in hunting circles for his training of his beloved beagles.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 ½ years, Norris A. Rice; daughter, Mitzi Jan Rice; granddaughter, Amy Lynn Brown; great-grandson, Hunter Rice; sister, Laura Sapp; and three brothers, Roland, Max and Larry Joe Rice. Surviving are his son, William A. (Sue) Rice, Jr. of Winston Salem; daughter, Vicki (Teddy) Brown of Greensboro; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pat Idol and Ruth Mears. A Celebration of his life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Scott Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in Sandy Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2016 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
