Larceny by employee

A former Kernersville Police Department (KPD) evidence technician has been charged with allegedly stealing $9,800 from the department.
Wendy Prescott Vance, 53, has been charged with felony larceny by employee, the KPD said Friday in a news release. Vance is accused of removing about $9,800 from an evidence room. Police said they discovered the discrepancy on January 28.
“These monies were removed from cases wherein the funds are classified as evidence, unclaimed, and/or recovered,” the KPD’s news release stated.
Vance had worked for the department since 2004 and began as a records clerk and administrative assistant. She was promoted to evidence technician in 2007.
“It is important for the community to know that this was the action of one person who acted illegally,” the KPD said. “She violated the trust of the agency and the citizens. Such actions will not be tolerated by the Kernersville Police Department.”
Vance was terminated from the KPD on Friday morning. Vance was given a secured bond of $10,000 and issued a Feb. 20 court date.
