Mr. Garland Stafford Idol, 91, quietly passed away, Saturday, June 27, 2015. Garland was born on March 12, 1924 in Guilford County to Chester L. and Leva Stafford Idol. He graduated from High Point High School in 1942. A veteran of World War II, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps following high School graduation. Garland was trained as a belly-gunner on the B-24 Liberator in the 444th Air Squadron. It was while stationed in Mississippi that he met his future wife, Lillian Gladys Wright.
Following the war, he was trained by, and went to work for the Remington-Rand Corporation. However most of his career was spent in sales and distribution of wholesale auto and truck parts. For many years following his retirement, he continued to work part-time with the family at Farmers Hardware in Kernersville (re-retiring in October of 2014).
Garland was a true outdoorsman. He had a passion for farming, gardening, hunting, and fishing. He and Gladys spent every fall on the NC coast fishing for the “big catch.” Garland was one of the founders of Boy Scout Troop 943 in Kernersville, where he served as a scout leader for many years. He also was a member of the Kernersville Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lillian Gladys Idol; two brothers, Glenn and Charles Idol; and a granddaughter, Evan Leigh Idol.
Surviving are: his daughter, Joan Everhart (Jimmy) of Kernersville; his son, Tony Idol (Linda) of Lewisville; four granddaughters; Anna Everhart Wood (Brad) of Gibsonville; Blake Everhart Adams (Jason) of Asheville; Erin Idol Scott (Blake) of Winston Salem; Jordan Idol Walker (Clay) of Charlotte; and two great-granddaughters; Kate and Libby Scott of Winston Salem.
A Funeral Service will be conducted at 2:30 PM Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. David Rorie officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM – 2:15 PM before the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church cemetery fund. 1510 Bunker Hill – Sandy Ridge Rd., Kernersville NC 27284.
