Sweepstakes establishments in Kernersville are being notified that should they be allowed to reopen in Phase 3 of the state’s plan for lifting business closures later this month, the Kernersville Police Department (KPD) will begin enforcing existing bans on their gaming machines.
KPD Lt. D. Crews, who supervises the department’s Criminal Investigations Division, said Tuesday that sweepstakes businesses have been in a back-and-forth legal battle with the state and individual municipalities over laws banning their operation for years, but it hadn’t really been an issue locally until recently.
