Joseph “Picnic Joe” Raymond Lindner, 86, of Cumberland, passed away early Thursday morning July 2, 2020, at his home in Kernersville, NC.
Born Jan. 19, 1934, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Vincent J. and Ruth Ella (Valentine) Lindner of Cumberland.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Anthony Lindner, Vincent (Junior) Lindner & wife Evelyn, Thomas (Tom) Lindner; sister-in-law, Betty (Conners) Lindner; and his daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Crump) Lindner.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen (Mullaney) Lindner; his brother, Alan Lindner, Loxahatchee, FL; his sister, Ursula Dawson, Calvert County, MD; sister-in-law, Darlene Lindner, Cumberland; his sons, Joseph, Mechanicsville, MD; Daniel Lindner and wife, Jodi, Kernersville, NC; and daughters, Kathleen (Lindner) Collins and husband, Mitchel, Kernersville, NC; and Mary Ann (Lindner) Sterling and husband, Craig, Germantown, MD; seven grandchildren, Nathan Lindner, Emily Lindner, Adam Lindner, Luke Lindner, Bennett Lindner, Caleb Sterling, and Cameron Sterling; many nieces, nephews, and special relative, Tim Mullaney, Simpsonville, SC, who lived with the family while attending Bishop Walsh.
Joe was a 1952 graduate of LaSalle High School. After high school Joe worked at Texaco Gas Station, Schmidt Baking Company & the US Postal Service.
After retirement from the Postal Service, Joe volunteered at Bishop Walsh High School in the cafeteria and at sporting events. He was a dedicated fan. The highlight of each year was volunteering for the ACIT Tournaments. He loved God, family, Cumberland, and sports. Anyone who knew Joe knew his favorite teams were the Baltimore Orioles and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He loved attending sporting events with his children and grandchildren and watching them play. He was their greatest fan!
Joe was a member of the Shrine of SS Peter and Paul and a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus #586 in Cumberland, MD. In Kernersville, he attended Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Due to COVID-19, a small Mass will be performed at the Shrine of Saints SS Peter and Paul, Cumberland at a later date. Interment will be at the Rocky Gap Veteran’s Cemetery, Flintstone, MD (TBD).
