BB&T (Branch Bank &
Trust) is a major, North Carolina-and-beyond banking organization based in Winston-Salem.
In recent years, BB&T acquired both the Old Stone Bank and Southern National Bank
(which had maintained Kernersville locations), and established its banking branch office,
with drive-through, and ATM services at its 237 East Mountain Street location.
The bank offers a wide range of personal, commercial and retail

Central Carolina Bank &
Trust Co. (CCB) has a Kernersville branch office at new Market Plaza, below Business I-40
just off South Main Street (in front of Food Lion).
CCB features a full line of consumer and commercial loans, as
well as full service for all retail banking needs. An automatic teller machine with RELAY

Centura Banks, Inc. is a
bank holding company formed by the merger of Peoples Bancorporation and the Planters
Corporation in November, 1990. Headquartered in Rocky Mount, N.C., Centura Banks, Inc.

assets of more than $4 billion.
The local branch office of Centura Bank, located at 823 South
Main Street, will move its location on September 11, 1998, into the Kroger store, also on
South Main Street. It will then have extended hours of Mon.-Sat. from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

First Citizens Bank was
founded in 1896 and has operated in Kernersville since 1984.
The company has assets of $6.9 billion and is ranked as the fifth
largest bank in North Carolina. The full-service bank operates 294 offices in 170

and mortgage loans, as well as investment services.
The Kernersville office, under the direction of J.R. Gorham, vice
president and branch manager, is located at 134 South Main Street with access to Cherry
St., just south of Mountain Street near the center of town.

First Union is a major
regional banking firm, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C.
The Kernersville office of First Union National Bank of N.C. is

Independence Bank
Independence Bank opened
for business on November 5, 1997, at 211 Broad Street (at the corner of Broad and Harmon).
It is the first home-owned bank chartered in Kernersville since 1903.
Independence Bank offers extended hours in addition to
normal operating hours, it is open until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, and offers
drive-through banking hours on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It also offers top deposit
