Kernersville – Mrs. Martha Ivey Cooke, 89, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2016. Martha was born on March 10, 1927, in Hermitage, Arkansas to Rufus and Hazel Ivey.
She was a devoted wife and mother. Her family was her greatest joy. One of her favorite quotes was “Children are the Bridge to Heaven”. Our busy home was filled with love, laughter and creativity. Her love for needlework and crafts are displayed proudly in our homes.
Martha was a faithful member of Main Street United Methodist Church serving for many years in the nursery so young parents could attend worship. She was also very active in the United Methodist Women. Her love of her church was evident in her active participation in the youth programs. Martha was instrumental in the formative years of Camp Close Encounter serving alongside her husband Louie as a mentor and adult counselor. She also served as a role model to many young women throughout her numerous years of service to Kernersville Rainbow Assembly of which she was a Past Mother Advisor. She was an active member of Kernersville Chapter Order of the Eastern Star # 205 as long as her health permitted.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her devoted husband Louie D. Cooke, Sr. in 2001, and a brother Robert Ivey. With the devotion of her loving husband Louie they joined together two families and created one incredible legacy of which survives, a daughter Martha F. (Marty) Walker (John) of Hampstead, six sons, Louie D. Cooke, Jr. (Jinny) of New Bern, Phillip R. Ferris (Barbara) of Florida, John T. Cooke of Kernersville, Paul L. Ferris (Donna) of Quaker Gap, Dennis W. Ferris (Robyn) of Kernersville, J. Michael (Mike) Cooke (Judie) of Brown Summit, 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include sisters, Betty Owen of Virginia Beach, Va., Dot Hagan of Missoula, MT, brother Raymond Ivey of Maryland, and a dear special “Sista” Mary Mullinax.
Funeral service will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church on Monday, November 21st at 3:00 p.m. The family will greet friends at the church from 1:30 PM until 2:45 PM. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
Martha’s family would like to give special thanks to Sticht Center physicians; Dr. Jennifer Gabbard and Dr. Patrick Hageman in the compassionate care given to their mother.
In lieu of floral tributes memorials may be directed to The Sheperd’s Center of Kernersville, 431-B, West Bodenhamer Street, Kernersville, NC 27284.
