An estimated thousand firefighters, family and friends paid tribute to the life of Kernersville Fire Rescue Chief Walt Summerville during his memorial service held on Sunday afternoon at First Christian Church.
After guests were seated, Summerville’s fellow firefighters carried his flag draped casket into the sanctuary as bagpipes played. Among the fire stations represented at his funeral were Forsyth County, Kernersville, Piney Grove, Colfax, Monroe, Calabash, Gastonia, Smith Grove, King, Salem Chapel, Mineral Springs, and others.
First Christian Church Pastor Dr. Pete Kunkle gave the opening remarks followed by a prayer.
After the playing of ‘I’ll Fly Away,’ retired Kernersville Police Chief and current Alderman Neal Stockton delivered what was perhaps the best presentation of his life when he eulogized his friend and colleague. For more, see the Tuesday, Nov. 8 edition.
