When Union Army Lt. William Samuel Wickham trudged across the countryside from Chancellorsville, Va. with the 55th regiment Ohio volunteers toward Gettysburg, Pa., he had just been witness to Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee’s greatest military victory with the complete and total route of the 11th Corps. What he noticed on that June 1863 march toward yet another battle was the beauty that abounded around him.
